Patient Rights
Understanding the state and federal law with regard to patient rights is important and diverse. Patient rights include information related to confidentiality, rights to due process with regard to forced administration of psychotropic medications, involuntary hospitalization, and potentially the forced administration of ECT.
Understanding where and under what circumstances individuals rights, as provided for under the United States and Illinois Constitutions, will yield to the State law intended to protect people who are suffering from mental illness or other disabilities that render them incapable of making reasonable decisions to protect themselves from harm.
